On Wednesday 17 June, Rob Sutton (Director of Heritage Consultancy at Cotswold Archaeology) and Jake Streatfeild James (Principal Consultant at WSP in the UK) will be speaking about Cotswold Archaeology’s excavations at M11 Junction 7A near Harlow — one of the largest archaeological projects undertaken in the Epping Forest District in recent years- (see Motorway discoveries – Cotswold Archaeology). The artefacts from the excavations are now preserved at the museum and a selection of them are on display in the new Town and Country: Life in Roman Durolitum exhibition- see Town and Country: Life in Roman Durolitum – Epping Forest District Museum Trust.
The excavations spanned the Harlow/Epping Forest District border, with most work happening in the Sheering, Matching and Churchgate Street area.
The project was nationally significant, revealing Roman cremation burials, a Bronze Age barrow ditch, and pits containing Iron Age objects.
Any members interested would be very welcome to attend, as well as any of the other talks at the Epping Forest District Museum – see below (the next one is 10 June on Life in Roman Colchester with curator Ben Paites).
Tickets can be booked online via TicketSource at https://www.ticketsource.com/efdmuseum or by emailing the museum at enquiries@efdmuseum.org.uk or calling 01992 716882.
